S. Maw grew out of a wholesale druggist company and later became an instrument maker. The company began in 1807 as Hornby and Maw. Several names are recorded for this company. In 1926 it is recorded as George Maw and Son, in 1860 as S. Maw and Son, in 1870 as S. Maw and Son and Thompson and in 1901 as S. Maw, Son and Sons.
