advertisement

Newspaper advert by Mrs Hunter for her dental services, especially treatment of children and supply of beautiful artificial teeth. The advertisement gives her terms and address.

historically women were often involved in providing medical care, including dentistry. Women were admitted on the same terms as men in the barber-surgeons charter granted by Henry VIII. The 18th century saw the emergence of a skilled dental practitioner and dental health products such as dentrifrices and toothbrushes became available. Dentists, including a number of women dentists, advertised their services in newspapers. In this advert Mrs Hunter states that she has studied teeth for many years and is able to preserve sound teeth, assist neglected teeth, cure tooth ache and can supply artificial teeth, tooth powder, toothbrushes and tinctures. Mrs Hunter also recommends female operators for children as they approach the work with 'more delicacy'. Patients had to pay a yearly subscription for her services.
