In 1859, Albert Niemann developed the drug cocaine from coca extracts and he recognised its anesthetic effect. Carl Koller conducted experiments with cociane and developed its use as a local anaesthetic. Cocaine was the first local anaesthetic agent to be widely used in dentistry. There were disadvantages of this new drug, it was highly addictive and only lasted for a relatively short time.
