local anaesthetic drug

red cardboard box with slide off lid and orange label printed in black and white. The box contains an empty square brown glass bottle for cocaine hydrochloride and instructions for use.

In 1859, Albert Niemann developed the drug cocaine from coca extracts and he recognised its anesthetic effect. Carl Koller conducted experiments with cociane and developed its use as a local anaesthetic. Cocaine was the first local anaesthetic agent to be widely used in dentistry. There were disadvantages of this new drug, it was highly addictive and only lasted for a relatively short time.
