extraction key

straight extraction key with open handle and claw held with slotted pin. The key does not have a bolster.

This is an early extraction key. It is of a simple design with a straight shaft, shaped handle and no bolster. The claw is fitted with a pin and could have moved freely. The claw would have fitted over the tooth and the key turned to extract the tooth. This design required leverage against the gum and could cause extensive damage to the gums and jawbone. Adjacent teeth could also have been extracted. This key was likely to have been made to order by an instrument maker, cutler or blacksmith.
